- Marmots are diurnal animals from the squirrel family that live underground in steppe regions.
However, in central Europe marmots are native to the high mountains.
They build extensive subterranean tunnel systems which they leave during the day.
As they are poor climbers, marmots spend most of their time on the ground.
In winter they retreat to their burrows to hibernate.
